For a tiny country, Portugal packs a punch! Starting in Lisbon, explore the many vibrant neighbourhoods on foot and by charming trams. Each neighbourhood has its own character, from the charming, traditional to the funky and edgy. A day trip to Sintra and seaside Cascais provides a wonderful escape from the city. Obidos and Coimbra are two smaller towns which are well worth a visit if you have more time. Porto is a charming, wine-soaked city which is easily explored on foot or by bike. Ride over the bridge for a port tasting in an old port warehouse, and enjoy fresh seafood where the Douro river meets the Atlantic ocean.
An historic train hugs the river from Porto to the Douro Valley, home of port wine. There are plenty of hikes to do in the region, through rolling vineyards, with panoramic vistas down to the river. After working up an appetite, enjoy a gourmet winery lunch, washed down with local wines of course!
Accommodation we recommend includes small boutique hotels, a cooking and nature lodge, and a working winery. Travel is reasonably easy by train, although we recommend hiring a private driver for some of the travel days, for convenience and to be able to stop along the way.
We recommend at least 8 – 14 days for your visit to Portugal.
