After the horrors of the 90s, Rwanda is going places, with new industry, foreign investment and social security schemes being introduced. This is, for the most part, due to their gorilla tourism and conservation industry.
Tracking the rare mountain Gorillas in the Volcanoes National Park is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It is an honour and a privilege to observe these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat. After hiking deep into the forest to find a Gorilla family, you’ll enjoy a precious hour observing children playing, mothers chattering and the big Silverback watching over his family.
Fly in to the capital, Kigali, and spend a day exploring this up-and-coming city. The genocide museum is confronting yet extremely well carried out, and lunch at the hotel made famous by the film ‘Hotel Rwanda’ is a treat, with sweeping views over the city.
The Volcanoes National Park is a 3 hour drive from Kigali, where you’ll spend three nights.
We recommend around 5 days in Rwanda, and travel is best done with a private driver/guide.
Accommodation is in a 4* hotel in Kigali, and a luxury lodge in the mountains.
Conservation is very important in Rwanda, and Gorilla permits are extremely limited (and very expensive), with a portion of each permit going towards conservation and supporting Rwandan families. Organise your Rwanda holiday well in advance to avoid disappointment.
